The figure shows a 23.4% drop compared to the same period last year. UAE with $143.890 mln, Hong Kong with $76.322 mln Germany with $65.131 mln, and Russia and and Spain with $59 mln and $43.720 mln, respectively, were among the major importers of the Iranian dried fruits.

The figure, however, was lower by 30.5% compared to the same period last year, the report said. Iran has been striving to rise its non-oil exports. 67,000 ha earmarked for growing pistachios

Pistachio nuts will be grown on a massive new farm within a decade in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
A 67,000-hectare area has been earmarked for growing the nut, which has a current market value of more than US$5,500 per ton.
Most of the farmers growing the crop will be ethnic Uygurs, said Li Yuzhang, manager of the Xinjiang Kashgar Cadina Agriculture Science & Technology Co Ltd.
The company has been growing pistachios in Xinjiang since 2001.
At the moment, Iran produces 45 per cent of the world's supply, the United States 25 per cent.
Prices in the international market are usually decided by several major pistachio companies from the two countries, Li said.
China is one of the largest consumers of nuts, including pistachios, in the world. It imported more than 50,000 tons of pistachios in 2003, accounting for 13.3 per cent of world trade volume.
The Chinese are expected to consume more than 150,000 tons of pistachios a year by 2010," said Li. He said Xinjiang's contribution would satisfy most of the demand by then.

"By 2020, the Kashgar pistachioo farms will rank among the top three pistachio farms in the world, together with the ones in Kerman, Iran, and California, the United States," he said.
From the middle of the 1990s, China started to import pistachio saplings and started commercial experiments in Beijing and the provinces of Hebei and Shanxi in North China, Shandong in East China, Yunnan in Southwest China and Gansu in Northwest China.
But almost all experiments failed, Li said, until he started experimenting with the nut in Xinjiang in 2001.

The favourable natural environment there, its unique soil profile and quality and abundant underground water resources, as well as breeding and irrigation technology developed by Li's company, have made the region the ideal place to grow the crop.
When the pistachio starts to bear fruit, it could yield 75,000 yuan (US$9,000) per hectare, which is six to eight times higher than ordinary cash crops such as cotton," said Li.

Yan Xuguang, director of the poverty relief office of the Kashgar government, said there are 2.7 million farmers in the area and 40 per cent of them are now living in poverty. Grain and cotton are two major agricultural products in the region and the per capita annual income of farmers in poverty is only 870 yuan (US$100), Yan said.
When the farm is established, a third of local farmers will work in the project and their income will increase considerably, he predicted.
